Barry Kistnasamy is a medical doctor with additional training in occupational and environmental health. He has 25 years’ experience in health policy, health planning and management in the public, non-governmental and private health sectors as well as the provision of occupational health, HIV/AIDS and TB interventions and compensation services. He has worked with the World Health Organisation, International Labour Organisation and World Bank, served on many national and international boards, committees, and commissions. He heads Occupational Health in the Department of Health of South Africa and is the Compensation Commissioner for occupational lung diseases in mineworkers. His research and programme activities include Social Determinants of Health; Computer Aided Detection (CAD) for TB and Silicosis on Chest X-rays; Use of Ultraportable X-ray units; TB interventions in key and vulnerable populations; Social Protection interventions in workers and Climate Change and Health. He is a founding member of the BRICS TB Research Network and serves as the focal person for South Africa.
